The castle built in 1490 is set within the flat landscape of the wider Shannon Estuary and is sheltered by the small island of Carrig only 200m to the north across the salt marsh which is inundated at high tide. The medieval Church of Carrigafoyle stands opposite the castle and is built in the same style.

Carrigafoyle Castle, built between the years 1490 and 1500, is considered one of the strongest of Irish fortresses. It stands on a rock in a small bay off the Shannon estuary, and its name is an Anglicisation of the Irish, Carraig an Phoill “rock of the hole”.

Now a listed National Monument, its battlements provide stunning views of the estuary and the most interesting feature of the building is the dock, which allowed boats to tie up safely. This was particularly important when in the 1500’s the O’Connor’s of Kerry held political power over the area which allowed them to “inspect” ships passing to and from the port of Limerick.

Details beyond that are sketchy, sources indicated. It is not clear whether all five themes will be presented as a medley or separately, or whether the 42-piece Oscar orchestra will be onstage at the Dolby Theatre or in the pit.

Reached this morning in Dublin, Noone tells Variety: “The wonderful producers at the Oscars decided that they would like to finally see a female presence on the podium after all these years.”

She praised Oscar musical director Rickey Minor as “an amazing kindred spirit who endeavors to elevate music and musicians at every possible turn.”

The 18-year-old singer won five of her six nominations, including song of the year, best pop vocal album, album of the year, record of the year and best new artist.

At the 62nd annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night, Billie Eilish emerged as a five-time winner during the ceremony hosted by Alicia Keys.

The 18-year-old singer and first-time Grammy winner — who grew up recording songs with her brother, Finneas O’Connell, a fellow Grammy winner who co-writes and produces her music, in the bedroom of her parents’ house in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Highland Park — was up for six awards during the ceremony.

Eilish won for best vocal pop album, album of the year and record of the year (When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?), song of the year (“Bad Guy”) and best new artist.
