On Raglan Road on an autumn day I saw her first and knew That her dark hair would weave a snare that I might one day rue; I saw the danger, yet I passed along the enchanted way, And I said, let grief be a fallen leaf at the dawning of the day.
On Grafton Street in November we tripped lightly along the ledge Of the deep ravine where can be seen the worth of passion’s pledge, The Queen of Hearts still making tarts and I not making hay Oh I loved too much and by such by such is happiness thrown away.
I gave her gifts of the mind I gave her the secret sign that’s known To the artists who have known the true gods of sound and stone And word and tint without stint for I gave her poems to say. With her own name there and her own dark hair like clouds over fields of May
On a quiet street where old ghosts meet I see her walking now Away from me so hurriedly my reason must allow That I had loved not as I should a creature made of clay When the angel woos the clay he’d lose his wings at the dawn of day.Source: Musixmatch
You know a dream is like a river Ever changin’ as it flows And a dreamer’s just a vessel That must follow where it goes Trying to learn from what’s behind you And never knowing what’s in store Makes each day a constant battle Just to stay between the shores…and
I will sail my vessel ‘Til the river runs dry Like a bird upon the wind These waters are my sky I’ll never reach my destination If I never try So I will sail my vessel ‘Til the river runs dry
Too many times we stand aside And let the waters slip away ‘Til what we put off ’til tomorrow Has now become today So don’t you sit upon the shoreline And say you’re satisfied Choose to chance the rapids And dare to dance the tide…yes
I will sail my vessel ‘Til the river runs dry Like a bird upon the wind These waters are my sky I’ll never reach my destination If I never try So I will sail my vessel ‘Til the river runs dry
There’s bound to be rough waters And I know I’ll take some falls But with the good Lord as my captain I can make it through them all…yes
I will sail my vessel ‘Til the river runs dry Like a bird upon the wind These waters are my sky I’ll never reach my destination If I never try So I will sail my vessel ‘Til the river runs dry
Yes, I will sail my vessel ‘Til the river runs dry ‘Til the river runs dry
This song was released in April 1992 as the fifth and final single from the album. It became his ninth number-one hit on the Billboard country charts in late 1992.
According to Garth Brooks, James Taylor—his childhood hero—was an inspiration for writing “The River”. Victoria Shaw recalled, “We were blank, so blank. And so finally, he said, ‘You know what? Let’s just take a break. What are you listening to on the stereo?’ And I had just bought this new James Taylor CD, so I put it on and were just listening to it, and it got us in a mood.”
Garth Brooks wrote about this song in the liner notes of his album “The Hits”, “It is a song of inspiration… a song that I will be proud of a hundred years from now. Victoria Shaw is a wonderful writer and a wonderful friend. And this is what happens when two dreamers get together and write from the heart.”
This track is also included on three albums that have sold more than ten million copies each in the US: “Ropin’ The Wind”, “The Hits” and “Double Live”.
When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary When troubles come and my heart burdened be Then, I am still and wait here in the silence Until You come and sit awhile with me.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas I am strong, when I am on your shoulders You raise me up to more than I can be
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas I am strong, when I am on your shoulders You raise me up to more than I can be.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas I am strong, when I am on your shoulders You raise me up to more than I can be.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas I am strong, when I am on your shoulders You raise me up to more than I can be.

Lyrics
Oh the Green and Red of Mayo I can see it still It’s soft and craggy boglands It’s tall majestic hills Where the ocean kisses Ireland And the waves carress it’s shore Oh the feelin’ it came over me To stay forever more Forever more
From it’s rollin’ coastal waters I can see Croagh Patrick’s peak Where one Sunday every Summer The pilgrims climb the reek Where Saint Patrick in it’s solitude Looked down across Clew Bay And With the ringin’ of his bell Called the faithful there to pray There to pray
Oh take me to Clare Island The home of Granuaile It’s waters harbour fishes From the herring to the whale And now I must depart it And reality is plain May the time not pass so slowly ‘Fore I set sail again Set sail again
Oh the Green and Red of Mayo I can see it still It’s soft and craggy boglands It’s tall majestic hills Where the ocean kisses Ireland And the waves carress it’s shore Oh the feelin’ it came over me To stay forever more Forever more
Stay forever more
Oh the Green and Red of Mayo Oh the Green and Red of Mayo Oh the Green and Red of Mayo Oh the Green and Red of Mayo

A friend of mine, she cries at night And she calls me on the phone Sees babies everywhere she goes And she wants one of her own
She’s waited long enough she says And still he can’t decide Pretty soon she’ll have to choose And it tears her up inside
She is scared, Scared to run out of time
I see my folks are getting on And I watch their bodies change I know they see the same in me And it makes us both feel strange
No matter how you tell yourself It’s what we all go through Those lines are pretty hard to take When they’re staring back at you
Oh Oh Oh, scared you’ll run out of time
When did the choices get so hard With so much more at stake Life gets mighty precious When there’s less of it to wa-a-a-aste
Mmm-m-m-m-m-m
Mmmmmmm, scared you’ll run out of time
Just when I thought I’d had enough And all my tears were shed No promise left unbroken There were no painful words unsaid
Yo-o-o-u came along and showed me I could leave it all behind You opened up my heart again And then much to my surprise
I found love, baby, love in the nick of time (Love in the nick of time) I found love darlin’, love in the nick of time (Love in the nick of time) I found love baby, love in the nick of time
